Shonishin is a non-penetrative technique developed by the Japanese, specifically for children of all ages. It can be used on the adults too. A flat nail looking tool is used (pictured) over the body to do what needs to be done. It is very gentle and very quick.
Needles can be used with children. Treatments are much shorter than those for adults, dependent on the age of the child. For babies, needling is pretty much an in/out action. Very quick and most bubs don’t even realise what has happened. This is the joy of working with such fine needles. 5 year olds, may need to have needles in for a few minutes, and 10 year olds longer.
Having 2 children myself, I understand that children move their goalposts VERY regularly. What is ok 1 minute is not the next. I have learnt to adapt to how a child presents and communicate what needs to be done and why. Those that are verbal can negotiate as needed. I will work within the child’s comfort zone.
Some reasons that children may come into the clinic for include pain associated with growing, headaches and sports injuries. Digestive complaints may also be tended to.
Older children, tweens and teens may find acupuncture also beneficial.
