Many patients have come for acupuncture looking for assistance with conception, whether this be natural or assisted (IVF).
Acupuncture can continue throughout pregnancy for pain, morning sickness, fatigue, relaxation and more. Acupuncture assists the body to release endorphins, your naturally produced pain killers. This is very effective for birthing, particularly for chemical induction which can bypass your own body's ability to cope with pain. Everyone should be entitled to a healthy and happy pregnancy.
Labour preparation, which can assist delivery, is also something that we can help you with. Acupuncture helps mum and bub relax and prepare for the journey ahead.
Labour preparation can also include induction. There are acupuncture points that can be used to encourage labour to start and/or continue. This kind of treatment can commence at 36 weeks, however, for induction, works best around your expected due date or beyond.
If bub is presenting posterior or breech, acupuncture and/or moxibustion can be used to encourage a change in presentation. Ideally breech presentation should be addressed around 35-36 weeks.
Acupuncture can be used to aid lactation, assist in recovery and help with sleep and relaxation. Any issues that bub may have can be worked on through Mum whether breastfeeding or not.
For parents looking for acupressure to use during the birthing process, my colleague Dr Debra Betts has a lovely video you can download for a small fee on the google play store. Debra is a trained acupuncturist and midwife in New Zealand. Her explanation of points is very easy to follow and may allow partners to feel of some assistance during the birthing process.
